Patchwork - Iris Niebach

Wow! Just take a look at the cover of the new book by Iris Niebach.

Iris Niebach presents good strong traditional tatting patterns in her books. She often designs several smaller motifs which she then uses as the basic building block for several large and small doilies and lace pieces. Iris explains that these motifs let the tatter build the piece "vertically" and reduces the number of rounds needed for larger pieces. It is a very intriguing concept.

In this new book, 20 new designs are presented as "patchwork pieces" which the tatter may assemble in many patterns, creating an almost kaleidoscopic look. And she embraces new techniques mixing with them standard favorites.

Iris is endlessly fascinated by tatting and has now published several books. She is a multilingual international teacher having taught tatting in Japan, in Denmark, at Palmetto's in South Carolina, and at Lacis in Berkeley, California. Her books are a good addition to your tatting library.

Her diagrams are clear and easy to read. The instructions are given in English, German and Italian.

These earrings show the woven picots technique used in the new book, too. I do not often pick out a favorite but the Herta motif on pg. 24 uses this weaving of picots 6 times. It is just lovely.
