Spring Tatting

Spring is a wonderful time for tatting. All the new growth and new colors inspire our shuttles and needles to flit about like butterflies.

Need a pattern to try out? But the brisk weather keeps you from deciding between snowflake and butterfly? Here is just the one! "Flutterflake" by Emma Crew.

And, of course, flowers bring bugs, bees and beautiful garden critters out to help pollinate the new crops. This praying mantis looks as if it ready to encourage any slackers.

If you follow the master tatter, Jane Eborall, online then you may have seen her swans gliding on the local river, no less than the "Avon" as in "Stratford on Avon" in the UK. This is also the birthplace of Shakespeare.

I happened to look at the Shakespeare house online just now and near it was a drawing and a painting purported to be of Anne Hathaway. In both portraits she was shown wearing a ruff, one plain and pleated, the other in Van Dyke style needle lace and pleated too. Neither one means that they were made by Anne and neither was tatted. But one never knows...she could have been a tatter.

And women of those days were known to be schooled in the needle arts and sewing, too. Anne and Will had their first baby in six months, so baby clothes were definitely needed. If you are in need of lacy things for a new baby in your home check here. https://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/609.asp

You may want to review the technique of "half-closed tatted rings" for some of the above patterns.

There is no mystery in making the half-closed tatted ring. As seen here, just draw the ring closed slowly and stop; leave the required length of bare thread showing. The directions will usually tell you the length needed. The important part is that the length of bare thread showing in the half-closed ring is measured the same for each ring. Without the accurate measurement, it will just look like a mistake.

Enjoy!
