I stumbled on a news story today. It saddened my heart and reminded me of the presence and persistence of sin. Of course I knew of sin in this world. Jesus told us to expect it.

This story brought home the fact that even the people who have devoted their lives to good, can succumb to the temptation and fall hard. This story was of a pastor who fell into sin. James tells us we don't fall into it but a dragged away by our own evil desires. (James 1:14)

The story also reminded me of the absolute necessity of reading and studying God's word for myself and for developing a personal relationship with my Lord, based on the truth of his word.

Sin doesn't happen suddenly. It takes time to erode away all the good intentions. Intentions of staying true to God?s word. This person happened to be a spiritual leader. His Bible teaching had changed over time. Easier for listeners to swallow. I wonder if no one in the congregation noticed. Was no one versed in the Bible enough to recognize when certain truths were lacking? Did no one confront him?

But back to my point.
It is true we need great pastors. We need Bible teachers, but nothing can take the place of our personal relationship with the Savior. This relationship comes from knowing him through his true word as stated in the Bible.

It is dangerous to rely on one person for all Bible truth. Study Scripture for yourself. Pray for wisdom and understanding. Listen to other trustworthy teachers. Remember God's word is infallible - people are not. As Romans 3:23 says, all of us have sinned. We all fall short of the glory of God. There was one perfect man, Jesus Christ, who died to save us from the penalty of sin.

Do you take advantage of Bible studies offered by your church? Other non-denominational studies, such as Bible Study Fellowship?

Every word of God is true. Take refuge in God and his true word, and be safe. (Proverbs 30:5-6)

Study. All Scripture is God breathed. It remains firm and doesn't change with the ebb and flow of society. (Psalm 119:89, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Isaiah 55:11)

Finally, pray for your pastor and Bible teachers.

• Pray for your pastor's protection against the attacks of Satan. Pray he will endure temptation and stand firm in his calling to teach God?s truth. (1 Peter 5:8)
  
• Pray for your pastor's marriage and family.


• Pray your pastor will quickly recognize his own sin, willingly repent, and seek forgiveness to renew his relationship with God. (James 1:14-15)


• Pray your pastor will be encouraged by church members, and those close to him. Make a point of offering your own encouraging words. (Romans 1:11-12)


• Pray that your pastor recognizes his need for the Spirit's wisdom. Pray he will never act without first seeking God's direction. (James 1:5)


• Pray your pastor is able to stand firm. Pray he won't be tempted to modify the message to make it more palatable to the congregation. (2 Timothy 1:14)


• God warns not to modify his word. (Revelation 22:18-19)
